Hot mix asphalt (HMA) is a paving material made from asphalt binder and graded aggregate (crushed stone, sand, and gravel) that is heated and mixed at a plant. It is the most commonly used material for driveways, parking lots, and roadways because it provides a strong, smooth, and durable surface.
Installation begins with proper site preparation. The area is graded and compacted to create a stable base. A crushed stone base layer is typically installed and compacted to support the pavement and allow proper drainage. The hot mix asphalt is then delivered from the asphalt plant at temperatures typically between 275°F and 325°F. The material is spread evenly using paving equipment and then compacted with heavy rollers to create a dense, smooth surface.
Hot mix asphalt is used when a long-lasting paved surface is needed for vehicle traffic. It is designed to handle repeated loads from cars and trucks while maintaining flexibility that helps resist cracking from temperature changes.
Benefits of hot mix asphalt include durability, smooth driving surfaces, fast installation, and cost-effective maintenance. Asphalt pavements can often be used within a short time after installation and can be repaired or resurfaced without replacing the entire surface. Properly installed and maintained asphalt can last many years while providing reliable performance for residential and commercial properties.
