Asphalt millings, also called reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP), are produced by removing and grinding the top layer of existing asphalt surfaces during road or parking lot resurfacing projects. The milled asphalt is recycled and reused as a paving material.
Millings are commonly used for driveways, rural roads, parking areas, and private access roads. The material is spread over a prepared and graded surface and then compacted using heavy rollers or compaction equipment. When compacted, the small pieces of asphalt bind together to form a firm and stable surface.
Asphalt millings are often chosen because they provide a durable surface at a lower cost than new hot mix asphalt. They also help reduce waste by recycling existing pavement materials. Once properly graded and compacted, millings can create a solid surface that resists washout better than loose gravel and requires less maintenance.
